European SOG movements

Welcome to the European Special Operations Movements page.

This section will be dedicated to all things AFSOC, from movements of our resident 7th and 67th SOS out of RAF Mildenhall to other SOG aircraft passing through or over the UK. This page will also update any changes to the 352nd SOG and include any other information that followers may find useful. Thanks to all who have contributed pictures and callsign info to this blog.

Update : 20/08/12

Reach 1033 departing EGUN 8th August eastbound, one of many Gunship movements through here the last few months. With a big thanks to Ade for another great Gunship photo.

Update to the 26th. The 7th SOS returned from their short TDY to Greece when 87-0023 returned back as Fisty 32. The 2 67th SOS Shadows both returned on the 19th July. 88-0195 returned back from the states which means all 352nd MC-130s are now back at home plate with local missions currently being flown.

July 13th saw the results of the 352nd ORI that occured earlier this year. Overall the 352nd SOG earned an "Excellent" in their inspection as well as individual "outstanding" awards for various units within the 352nd. The 13th also saw 87-0024 depart EGUN as Fisty 32 and she arrive back on the 16th as Fisty 31 before departing back out on the 19th July. The 67th SOS have 65-0991 away as Yoga 41 and 65-0992 as Rumor 41. 88-0195 is still stateside and should be due back shortly.

The 9th July saw 2 7th SOS MC-130Hs depart Mildenhall as Fisty 31/34. They were 88-1803 (34) and 87-0023 (31). Also into Shannon airport for a nightstop was C-32B 02-4452 arriving as Bazoo 71. This C-32B is from the 150th SOS at McGuire. Roger Green has been kind enough so send me a shot he took of 65-0991's new patch that was on static display at RIAT. Well captured Roger, thanks mate. The 352nd SOG also welcomed a new commander on 6th July with Col. Christopher Ireland taking lead of the group.

5th July saw one of the 1st glimpses of 65-0991s new nose art that celebrates the Son Tay raid in Vietnam in November 1970 which 65-0991 took part in as part of Lime 01/02. A massive thanks to Ade who again has caught a great picture of the nose art. Here she is about to depart as Shadow 61. The patch says "Son Tay Raider" "21st November 1970".

And to continue the run of Gunships passing through Mildenhall, 89-0513 "Killer Instincts"arrived 4th July. It arrived from Prestwick after departing Keflavik earlier in the day. It seems it had some sort gear problem as transitted to Mildenhall from Prestwich with her gear down. Full credit to Ade Carver again for another fine shot of this AC arriving as Reach 1004.

Ade has also captured 87-0024 awaiting departure from Runway 11 at Mildenhall as Talon 71 on 5th July 2012. Note the heritage nose art and the AR pods half the 7th SOS fleet now have.

Also of note is the additon of nose art being applied to the 352nd aircraft in the form of a heritage patch honoring the 2nd Air Commando group. The patch consists of a "C", lightning bolts, and an exclamation point. MC-130P 65-0991 should be having a different patch applied shortly to honour the Son Tay Raiders. Special Thanks to T Trower for this info.
Other exciting news was from the Stars and Stripes publication claiming up to 11 CV-22s are due to be based at EGUN under the command of the 352nd SOG and are still on course for a Spring 2013 arrival. More news over the coming months...................

352nd SOG Units and aircraft

The 352nd SOG currently has 2 flying units assigned, they are the 7th SOS and the 67th SOS who fly the MC-130. The 7th SOS fly the MC-130H Combat Talon and the 67th SOS fly the MC-130P Combat Shadow. The 321st STS make up the 352nd SOG. Along with the 3 units, the 352nd are also supported by the 25th IS Det.2 who are operationally tasked by the 352nd at RAF Mildenhall. Below is a breakdown of the 7th SOS and 67th SOS aircraft assigned.

352nd Nose art

The 352nd's SOG Hercs used to have many a fancy nose art during the 2000s. Nowadays sadly this art has been removed from all base assigned MCs, however this section will provide images of the various nose art that was on display on the various residents in the past. During their time the 7th SOS displayed nose art such as "Fourth Horseman" "Merlins Magic" "The Highlander" "Dawg Pound" "Berserker" and "Iron Maiden".

More art pictures will be added to this section shortly............

2011 RHWW base visit

In July Dave B arranged a base visit to EGUN which was well attended by many members of the group. The highlight of the tour, for myself anyway, was a trip to the SOG ramp and a chance to climb aboard MC-130P Combat Shadow 66-0220. Thanks to Dave for the following pictures :

MC-130P 66-0220

Waiting for her next mission

It was a great start to the tour with all sorts of questions being answered by the 67th SOS pilot on hand as well as 66-0220s crew chief and a chance to sit up front and pose for a few pictures as well as look at all the various bits inside this well travelled Herc before heading off the ramp for some food.

Many thanks to Dave for organising the tour and the folks at EGUN for their fantastic hospitality and hosting us for the day

Previous News 2012

To keep up the now regular passing through of AC-130's, 69-6574 "Iron Maiden" passed through Mildenhall on her way home. As can be seen in the shot from Ade below she is sporting mission marks as is regular with the Spectres. Thanks for the shot Ade.

Yet another Gunship arrived at Mildenhall this morning as Reach 1040, this time being AC-130W 88-8303 from Cannon AFB. This means all 3 varient of Gunship has passed through Mildenhall in the last week.

88-0195 departed EGUN on the 21st heading back stateside via St Johns. This may be heading for upgrades so will keep an eye out if this machine returns with the AR pods that 87-0024 and 88-1803 are now wearing. Here is a shot of Breeze 51 departing a grey Mildenhall, with thanks to Dave Brown for getting a shot of her. I also have another couple of shots to add to the blog shortly from Roger Green and Neil Damsell.

Star show at the Hall today, 18th June, was AC-130H 69-6569 nicknamed "Fatal Attraction" arriving as Reach 1035. As can be seen by this lovely shot by Ade Carver, she has quite a deadly history as depicted with the mission marks on her nose. Thanks for the shot Ade (sorry some of the wing is chopped off but the blog site doesn't like extra large pics and I wanted to show as much detail at possible!). Also departing eastbound today was 65-0992, a local 67th SOS Shadow as Kimbo 41 with Kimbo 42 also preparing to depart with details to follow later. Kimbo was last used last year by the 352nd.

Sad news broke on 18th Feb when it was announced a U-28A had crashed on its way back to Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti killing all 4 on board. They were Capt Ryan P. Hall from the 319th Special Operations Squadron, Capt Nicholas S. Whitlock and 1st Lt Justin J. Wilkens from the 34th Special Operations Squadron and Senior Airman Julian S. Scholten from the 25th Intelligence Squadron. R.I.P

In the first month of the year it has been pretty quiet for the 352nd apart from their ususal Talon / Shadow training flight locally. An interesting SOG flight was made by 4 15th SOS MC-130Hs transiting through the Med from the States. This flight comprised of Reach 1008 (MC-130H 89-0281), Reach 1009 (87-0126), Reach 1010 (88-0193) and Reach 1011 (84-0476). This then returned homeward bound between the 28th/31st with all remaining the same apart from Reach 1009 which was 88-0264, with 87-0126 starting a deployment downrange it seems.

Another item of news was regarding the arrival of the CV-22 Osprey to RAF Mildenhall and the standing up of the unit running slightly behind. We should start seeing these arrive early 2013, with an anticipated 10 Osprey due to be on strenght eventually.

AC-130U 90-0166 "Hell Raiser" arrived Mildenhall as Reach 1004. Credit to Chris Stig for this cracking picture of her landing runway 29 on 12/04/12. Thanks Stig!

The 352nd SOG have been kept busy this week getting ready for their ORI with a host of flights between EGUN and Fairford on the 29th. The 352nd spent most of the week flying evening sorties out of Fairford with many flight heading to the Coy DZ and Sculthorpe to work 321st STS parties Ironcross and Viceroy for airdrops and landings before heading back to Fairford. All aircraft returned back to Mildenhall on 5th April with particular note MC-130H 88-1803 carrying the Mk32B-902E usually seen on the Hurlbert based machines when passing through Mildenhall to/from Theatre, so a nice addition to see a 7th SOS carrying them on home turf. The 352nd are due to re-deploy to Fairford late April/early May for their ORI.

Today (31st March) is 7 years on since the 7th SOS lost Combat Talon II 87-0127 whilst low flying training in Albania under the callsign WRATH 11. Those crew lost with the 352nd and 25th IS Det at RAF Mildenhall were Captain Todd Roger Bracy, Captain Surender Dominic Kothakota, Captain James Salvatore Cronin, Captain Gil Chang Williamson, First Lieutenant Ray Charles Owens Junior, Chief Master Sergeant Lawrence B. Gray, Technical Sergeant James Richard Henry, Technical Sergeant Glenn Lastes & Staff Sergeant Patrick Ryan Pentico.

Star visitors to Mildenhall today saw the arrival of 2 of Cannons M-28s in the form of Reach 1030 and 1032. They are making their way back stateside having passed through Mildenhall over a year ago enroute downrange. A very welcome couple of visitors. Many thanks to Joe for the many updates on these over the week. Other news is the 352nd SOGs ORI finished on the Wednesday 16th May with all based aircraft returning home. Results of the ORI should be released shortly....

The 4th May saw the arrival of Reach 1017, MC-130H 85-0011 of the 15th SOS, the 2nd 15th SOS MC-130H of the week passing through. A massive thank you to Ade Caver for this picture of her arrival today :

3 9th SOS MC-130Ps arrived at EGUN in the end between the 26th and 27th April. Reach 1010 (69-5819) departed east on the 28th with Reach 1011 (69-5823) departing on the 29th leaving just 66-0217. A big thanks to Roger Green, here is a picture of Reach 1011 departing EGUN.

Also worthy of note is 87-0024 returned from the States on 26th April as Breeze 51 and thanks to Neil Damsell for confirming it also has the AR wing pods fitted so joins 88-1803 in the same configuration.

The 352nd SOG should be very busy over the coming week with the start of their ORI and short deployment to Fairford. Reports on movements will continue during this time with any training missions of interest of different callsigns being logged on here.

The 352nd have been pretty busy the last few days with 66-0220 visiting Skydstrup as Kelt 41 being visiting Ramstein - Eindhoven before back to EGUN (Thanks Oz). There were also a couple of 7th SOS MCs up as Kelt 31/32 (87-0024/88-1803) heading eastbound.
